Assignments:  

GDP Lessons:  Complete Lesson 91-95 in Gregg College Keyboarding & Document Processing, 10th edition. Print out and proof read all documents that you create and place them in your folder.

Transcription Assignments: Transcribe the ten KEY232 recordings that have been loaded into Express Scribe (also listed below). The first 4 recording are letters, the next 4 recordings are chart notes and the last two recordings are histories and physical exams. Print out and proofread all documents that you create and place them in your folder.

  Transcription Instructions

Instructions:

  • Listen to the dictations and type them using the format illustrated in the Sample Documents below.
  • You may use the Internet Research Links below to find and check the spelling of medical terms and medications.

Procedure:

  1. Plug your earphones into the earphones jack extender tied to the keyboard cable.
  2. Place an Express Scribe template on the keyboard. (See instructor for keyboard templates.)
  3. Open Express Scribe (double-click on the Express Scribe icon found on the desktop).
  4. Click on (select) a dictation file.
  5. Open Microsoft Word (Start > All Programs > Microsoft Word).
  6. Press the PLAY key (F9) to start the dictation. (See Hot Key list below or the keyboard template for other controls.)
  7. Type the report.
  8. Proof read the report.
  9. Put your name on the report. (See sample below for proper heading.)
  10. Print the completed report and place it in your keyboarding folder.
  11. Save all completed work to your personal thumb drive or floppy disk.

 Custom Dictionary

Downloading:

This is a custom dictionary file that will allow Microsoft Word to automatically correct all of the medical term used in the transcription assignments. This file may be downloaded and placed in a folder named Dictation Files on the C: drive of your computer. (This may have already been placed on your computer.)

Settings:

The setting in Microsoft Word for the custom dictionary must be reset each time your lab computer is restarted.

To turn on the custom dictionary for Medical Keyboarding:

  1. Open Word.
  2. Click on the Tools menu.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Click on the Spelling & Grammar tab.
  5. Click on the Custom Dictionaries… button.
  6. Click on the Add button.
  7. Click on the down arrow in the Look in: dropdown box.
  8. Select Local Disk (C:).
  9. Click on the Dictation Files folder.
  10. Click on the Open button.
  11. Click on the KEY232 Custom Dictionary file.
  12. Click on the OK button.
  13. Click on the OK button again.
  14. Click on the OK button again.
