Transcription Instructions |

Instructions:
- Listen to the dictations
and type them using the format illustrated in the Sample
Documents below.
- You may use the Internet Research Links below to find and check the spelling of
medical terms and medications.
Procedure:
- Plug your earphones
into the earphones jack extender tied to the keyboard cable.
- Place an Express
Scribe template on the keyboard. (See instructor for
keyboard templates.)
- Open Express Scribe
(double-click on the Express Scribe icon found on the
desktop).
- Click on (select) a dictation
file.
- Open Microsoft Word
(Start > All Programs > Microsoft Word).
- Press the PLAY key (F9)
to start the dictation. (See Hot Key list below or the keyboard template for other
controls.)
- Type the report.
- Proof read the
report.
- Put your name on the
report. (See sample below for proper heading.)
- Print the completed
report and place it in your keyboarding folder.
- Save all completed
work to your personal thumb drive or floppy disk.

Custom
Dictionary |
Downloading:
This is a custom dictionary file that will allow Microsoft Word to
automatically correct all of the
medical term used in the transcription assignments. This file may be
downloaded and placed in a folder named Dictation Files on the C: drive of
your computer. (This may have already been placed on your computer.)

Settings:
The setting in Microsoft Word for the custom dictionary
must be reset each time your lab computer is restarted.
To turn on the custom dictionary for
Medical Keyboarding:
- Open Word.
- Click on the
Tools menu.
- Select
Options.
- Click on the
Spelling & Grammar tab.
- Click on the
Custom Dictionaries… button.
- Click on the
Add button.
- Click on the
down arrow in the Look in: dropdown box.
- Select
Local Disk (C:).
- Click on the
Dictation Files folder.
- Click on the
Open button.
- Click on the
KEY232 Custom Dictionary file.
- Click on the
OK button.
- Click on the
OK button again.
- Click on the
OK button again.
